Physical Education

“The sky has no limits. Neither should you.” – Usain Bolt

At Southill Primary School, we understand that promoting physical and emotional wellbeing is a crucial part of every child’s development. We aim to encourage a sense of enjoyment in being active and to equip all our pupils with the skills and attitudes they need to make informed decisions about their health. We recognise the value of Physical Education (P.E) and we fully adhere to the aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time (before, during and after school)
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

P.E. is taught at Southill as an area of learning in its own right (as well as integrated within other curriculum areas wherever possible). It is taught at a minimum of one extended PE session a week, or two sessions per week wherever possible.

We teach lessons so that children:

Have fun and experience success in a wide range of sports
Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development
Secure and build on a range of skills
Develop positive sporting attitudes
Understand basic rules in a wide range of games and activities
Experience positive and healthy competition
Learn in a safe environment
Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active and with a positive attitude towards exercise and looking after their physical and mental health.

The Daily Mile and Fitness Thursdays

To encourage children to be physically active every day, Southill participates in The Daily Mile. The aim of this initiative is to get Southill students out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom.

Southill also provides ‘Fitness Thursdays’. This involves a member of staff leading a workshop before school begins to encourage children to exercise regularly. Scoot and Toot, Skip2BFit and Dance are just some of the many activities we offer.
