All Aboard the Titanic: Setting Sail with Kaspar, Prince of Cats
We’re really excited to share that we’ve just started reading our brand-new book we will be basing our writing on, Kaspar, Prince of Cats by the brilliant Michael Morpurgo. After already diving into some of his most well-loved books this year—Beowulf and War Horse—we’ve become big fans of his storytelling. His characters are always so real, his stories are packed with history, and there’s always something to get us thinking. This book looks like it’s going to be another great one!
To launch our new unit, we’ve been exploring the historical setting of the story: the Titanic. We kicked things off with a fun and creative activity where the children turned the word “Titanic” into a drawing of the ship itself. Using a step-by-step guide, they created some absolutely amazing artwork! It was such a great way to get into the world of the book and start thinking about the time period.
After that, we did a bit of detective work! The children used handouts and online sources to research the Titanic and find out more about this fascinating piece of history. All of this will come in very handy soon—we’ve got an exciting piece of writing coming up that we’re sure the children are going to love.
Even though we’ve been moved to the library this week due to SATs, the children have taken it all in their stride. Their enthusiasm and effort have been fantastic, and their interest in the Titanic has really brought our classroom (or library!) to life. It’s been lovely to see them so engaged and curious—and we’re only just getting started!
We’ll keep you posted as our adventure with Kaspar, Prince of Cats continues. Watch this space!
