Taking a breather

This week was mental health week and each afternoon this week the children and I took some time out to switch off and have a breather.  During the week we talked about the importance of mental health and how it is just as important as our physical health.  We discussed how it is normal to sometimes feel overwhelmed, to feel like crying or to feel frustrated and angry and that sometimes it is our body and mind saying we need to take some time out, slow down and do an activity that brings calmness.  We took part in a stormbreak movement called “Nature’s Trees”, which slowed us down and encouraged mindful breathing. Then we had 10/15 minutes each afternoon dedicated to mindful drawing, colouring or reading.  Children could sit with their friends or sit alone while listening to calming music.  It was a reminder to us all that slowing down is important and when life gets a bit busy, to stop, take a deep breath and give yourself a few moments to reset.
