Welcome to Year 2
Tuesday 1st July- Transition Day
Today, we had a great time meeting our new class as part of our transition session! We spent some time finding out what it will be like in Year 2 in the Autumn Term as well as finding out a bit more about our teachers. We then read a special story all about different families, this led us onto an activity where we draw our family and shared with the class people who are important to us. This meant we could get to know the children and they could get to know us!
Later in the afternoon we played pass the whisper, practising our inside voices and taking turns. Next we went outside to play some bubble body popping games! We had to use our good listening and teamwork skills, as our partner blew the bubbles and told us which body part we were going to use to pop them. Popping them on our heads seemed to be very popular… but also quite tricky as the wind was blowing the bubbles everywhere!! We ended the afternoon with some fun parachute games. This required lots of teamwork and again, working on those good listening skills!
The first day back in the Autumn term is Thursday 4th September. Registration time for all classes is 8.45-8.55am. On the first day back, teaching staff will be in class ready to greet children as they arrive and to support where necessary. After this, we encourage children to come in on their own so please drop them off in the playground and allow them to enter by themselves. Staff will be at hand to help.
Teaching staff arrangements for September will be as follows:
● Reception: Mel, Mrs Kench and Lucy
● Year 1: Laura, Kelly and Mrs Harris
● Year 2: Emma, Emily and Emily
● Year 3: Andrea, Mrs Wallis and Sarah
● Year 4: Kirsty and Sue
● Year 5: Tom and Mrs Murray
● Year 6: Dan and Mrs Walkinshaw
What will it be like in Year 2?
Year 2 children will build upon the learning skills that they have been developing so far in KS1. They will continue to be encouraged to develop an independent approach to their
learning and school life, and we will be teaching and learning as a whole class. They will be the oldest and most experienced children in KS1 which means they can look forward to taking on the key roles in our Christmas performance! We will have lots of special events to look forward to, such as trips to Lyme Regis Fossil Museum and a visit from Samuel Pepys!
Reading and Maths
Our class reading sessions are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children will read as part of a guided group with an adult who is trained to deliver the Little Wandle reading scheme. We are very lucky to have volunteer readers in school, so your child is likely to read to an adult later in the week as well. Therefore, all children need their reading book and Reading Record with them in school every day. In Year 2 children’s reading books will be collected in on a fortnightly system. We will collect the books on the Tuesday, and the next book (which has been read in school with an adult) will come home the following day, on the Wednesday. Don’t worry, we will follow the same system throughout the year so it will be come obvious after a few weeks. We will also visit the library on Tuesday and Thursday morning, first thing to change our books.
Please try to read as much and as often as you can with your child over the summer holiday, it really does make a huge difference to their success at school. The Summer Reading Challenge is running again via local libraries and is a really great way to help keep your child interested in reading over the holiday. We will also send extra books home that are at your child’s reading level. Please return these on the first day of term ready for the next group to get started.
Please also encourage your child to practise their maths over the holidays. They can do this using their Numbots logins which are in the back of their reading records. The website can be found on the link below:
How do I pass on important information?
If you have any questions or concerns at any time we do hope that you will get in touch, just as we will contact you if necessary. There are regular opportunities to meet and discuss your child’s progress throughout the year, in addition to this you can contact us on Class Dojo or make an appointment through the school office at any point throughout the year.
Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to a really great year together in Year 2!
