In our recent Science lessons, we’ve been diving into the fascinating world of sound and noise. One of the first things we learned is that sounds are made from vibrations. When something vibrates, like a guitar string, or our vocal chords, it creates sound waves that travel through the air and into our ears!
We carried out a fun investigation to answer an interesting question: Do bigger ears help us hear better?
To make it a fair test, we listened to the same high-pitched sounds without changing the volume.
First, we listened to the sounds with our normal ears. Then, to make our ears bigger, we cupped our ears with our hands and finally, for a bit of extra fun, we created our own giant, paper ears and tested those too! This created a lot of laughter!
The results? Well…they were mixed! Some children said that making their ears bigger did make the sound louder and clearer, whereas, others didn’t notice a difference at all! So, do bigger ears work? Who knows! It might depend on the shape, how still we were or even how well we held the paper ears in place!
But one thing we do know, we had a lot of fun experimenting and a lot of giggles!
