Day 1 at St Briavels – Castles, Coats of Arms, and Clues!

Day 1 at St Briavels – Castles, Coats of Arms, and Clues!

What a brilliant start to our adventure here at St Briavels! Spirits were high right from the get-go — even our brief stop at the services turned into an impromptu performance zone, with human pyramids and cheerleading routines breaking out across the car park (who needs a warm-up session when you’ve got that kind of energy?).

Back on the coach, excitement built as we made our way through the final stretch to the castle. As we pulled up, a light drizzle greeted us, but it didn’t stand a chance against the WOW moment of seeing the castle for the first time. The children’s faces said it all — sheer awe and amazement. St Briavels Castle is officially the coolest place we’ve ever stayed.

Once we’d hauled our bags into the dorms (with much excitement about “who’s in whose room!”), we were warmly welcomed by the lovely YHA staff and tucked into a much-needed lunch — especially for those who hadn’t already demolished their snack stashes on the coach!

After lunch, it was time to explore. The children enjoyed some free time in the castle grounds before splitting into two activity groups. One group got crafty designing their own medieval Coat of Arms and tried their hand at candle dipping — a calming and creative experience that definitely brought out their inner artisans. Meanwhile, the other group took on picture orienteering, a fun and interactive way to explore the nooks and crannies of their new castle home.

Then it was time to switch, so everyone had a go at both activities. As the sun began to dip, we regrouped for some tile painting — a peaceful, absorbing task that allowed everyone to wind down after all the exploring and excitement. Best of all? The children get to bring their beautifully painted tiles home as a keepsake!

Next, came the moment they’d all been waiting for: room allocations! With suitcases exploded and beds ‘made’, the children began nesting into their rooms, transforming them into cosy bases for the rest of the week.

Dinner was a hit — cheeseburgers and chips or jacket potato with cheese and beans, with pudding to top it all off. Just when we thought the day couldn’t possibly get more exciting, it was time for our Murder Mystery Night. The children became detectives, roving the castle with their clipboards, uncovering clues and cracking codes to work out whodunnit. It was a fantastic end to a jam-packed day and it just so happens Mrs. Murray was the murderer – I always thought she looked a little suspicious…

As I write this, the castle is finally quiet… well, mostly. The children are tucked up in their bedrooms (hopefully sleeping!) and recharging for tomorrow’s adventures: fencing, archery, a countryside walk and finishing the day with campfire songs and stories.

It’s been an unforgettable first day — full of energy, discovery, and lots of laughter. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
