Daily Tasks – Monday 18th May 2020

Writing

We’ll start the week with a reading comprehension. You did an espresso comprehension very similar to this about a month ago.

Read the excerpt from Michael Morpurgo’s book, The Last Wolf at the link below (login details are below the link) then take the quiz and finally write your answers to the further questions in your books.

Extra optional activity: The narrator sets out on a quest, the type of quest anyone can go on even during a lockdown! If you want, why not continue the story and write about some of the amazing things he discovers about his family…

Arithmetic

Answers to Friday’s mental maths problems:

  1. 0.27   2. 30   3. 1100p or £11   4. 0.16   5. 2.82   6. 3.6   7. 3.75   8. 750000   9. 900   10. 550g   11. This was not a well worded question so I’ve decided not to include any possible answers – give yourself a free tick!   12. 16

Today’s task: Today’s mental maths involves algebra(!) and I think you’ll  find it fun. Try and do the calculations in your head but you can write down the answers so that you can compare them with others.

Maths No Problem

Answers to Friday’s Guided Practice questions:

1(a) boxboard 13%     1(b) container board 37%   1(c) printing and writing  30%

2 Yes.

Today’s task:

Chapter 14 Lesson 7  Workbook page 166 Q2. (There’s No need to do p165)

Hint: (c) Don’t forget what all the percentages in the chart should add up to. If you add together all the percentages you have been given or worked out you can find the percentage of schools that won 10 medals but don’t forget the question asks for the number of schools and not the percentage.

Now click on the link below and have a go at questions 1-4.

https://resources.whiterosemaths.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Y6-Summer-Block-3-WO6-Pie-charts-with-percentages-2020.pdf

Try and answer each question without looking at the tips first.

Top tips:

Q1. Remember when calculating percentages to work out 10% first and then use this answer to calculate the percentage you need to find eg 35% of 80 = 80 divided by 10 = 8 (10%) 8 x 3=24 (30%)  8 divided by 2 = 4 (5%)  24 (30%) + 4 (5%) =28 (35%)

Q2. Work out 50% first (1 sibling). Next work out 10% (3 siblings) and use this to calculate the other sibling totals.

Q3. If we know that 30 cars is 5% thenwe can use this to work out how many cars 10% is. Work out how many cars 1% is by dividing 30 by 5. This will be useful when calculating the black and silver car totals.

Q4. Look at the bold black text above the pie charts.

Topic

Click on the link below and watch the videos about Maya gods and the Maya ruler Pakal the Great.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zq6svcw

Imagine you are the archeaologist Alberto Ruz Lhullier exploring the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque. Write a series of  diary entries using the information on BBC Bitesize. Describe the things you uncover and the emotions you feel as you make exciting discoveries day by day. Write about the hieroglyphs you have to translate and the information they reveal about the Mayas and Pakal. Finally, write about the sensational discovery you make beneath the temple’s stone slabs describing what you find in as much detail as you can. Try to make your diary as authentic as possible by including details about the weather, food and local inhabitants experienced by Lhullier.

Reading

Don’t forget to keep reading as much as possible. Perhaps the excerpt you read from The Last Wolf today will inspire you to read the rest of the book if you are able to get hold of a copy. If not, I’m sure there’s another book somewhere in your bedroom that you’ve been meaning to read for some time but have never quite got around to. Now’s the time! Don’t forget the Week Junior digital edition is also available for free online.
