Home Learning

Friday 9th Sept 2022

Welcome to Year 1! This week I have sent a few bits home for you to have a look at and familiarise yourselves with. We will be using them over the next few weeks so please make sure you take them out of your child’s book bag and keep them at home to be used throughout the weeks and over weekends.

The activities that will be set will either directly link to the learning in class and will aim to consolidate what has been taught, or will support your child with a concept or activity that we will be looking at the following week. These activities are not designed to take long periods of time but are better if you can look at them little and often across the week.

Your support at home makes a huge difference!

Reading

Please read the book that your child has in their book bag. On Monday we will be continuing with the Little Wandle Scheme which the children started in Reception class. We will read your child’s new Little Wandle book in school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It will then be sent home on Wednesday for you to read and follow up at home. Your child will also start to bring home a school library book of their choice – this is not matched to their reading ability and is therefore a book to share together. Please record ALL reading in your child’s reading record so that we can see that reading, story sharing or other reading for pleasure has taken part every day at home.

Spellings

As of next week your child will have spellings to learn at home. These words are taken from the Year 1 National Curriculum and are ‘common exception’ words that your child is expected to be able to spell independently in their writing by the end of Year 1. You will notice that there are lots of  words that your child will already know from reception. Please use this week to read through the words together and become familiar with them, don’t panic if your child does not know them all! We will be learning them and applying them in our writing throughout the year.

You can access the list in the link below. A copy has also been sent home with your child today for you to keep.

Maths

This week we have been looking at some maths assessments. Your child has been focusing on numbers to 10, thinking about one more and one less, making comparisons between numbers and beginning to think about phrases such as greater than and less than. Please support at home using the number line that has come home today.

Focus on counting from 0-10 forwards and backwards starting from any given number. For example …5,6,7,8,9,10 or 7… 6,5,4,3,2,1,0.

Please practise forming numbers at home, writing them on paper or anything else that you have! Lots and lots of children struggled with this throughout the week. We will continue to work on it in class as well. These basic number skills are essential as they form the foundations ready for new concepts throughout year 1.

Thanks for your support
