English task

For today’s task, we would like you to think of some ideas in preparation for writing your own ‘Magic Box’ poem like the one you read on Friday.

First, have another look at ‘The Magic Box’ poem using the link below and then use the link Day 11 to see what today’s task is. Please record your ideas in your writing book.

The Magic Box poem

Arithmetic task

On Friday this week, you will be tested on your division facts for the 5 times table but the questions will be asked in any order.

As mentioned in the weekly email, Mr Mason has enrolled us in a Times Tables Rock Stars competition against other local schools so all of your scores between now and the 13th May will count towards our final ranking. So for your arithmetic tasks this week we would like you to spend about 15 minutes on TT Rockstars.

Maths task

Here are the answers to Friday’s worksheet:

Today we would like you to have a go at Lesson 8, ‘Calculating Total Amount’, on page 33 of the Maths No Problem Textbook.

It is all about solving word problems involving calculating the total amount of money.

First, cover the ‘Let’s Learn’ section of the page and then have a go at the ‘In Focus’ task. Then, uncover the ‘Let’s Learn’ section and compare the way they solved the problem to the way you did.

Work through the problem on page 34. You’ll notice they are drawing and using ‘bar models’ to represent the problem, something we’ve had a go at in school. These are a useful tool when solving problems. They help us to visualise the problem and the maths we need to use in order to solve the problem.

Have a go at the ‘Guided Practice’ drawing your own bar models to represent the problem and use any method you feel confident with to solve the calculations e.g. column addition, using/drawing a number line to add the tens and then ones, drawing the tens and ones (see link below for an example.)

Adding using tens and ones

Finally, complete pages 33 and 34 of the Workbook.
