Maths

Everyone has been sent home with a number line. Please support at home by practicing addition questions. It is really important that children do not always start from 0 or 1 so that they get used to circling the first number and then ‘counting on’ by jumping up the number line.

This is one method of adding that we will be referring to throughout the year – we are focusing on the method and use of a number line to find the answer rather than just ‘knowing’ what the answer is.

Once confident ask them to show you that addition in a number bond diagram for example … 3 + 6 = 9 The 9 would be the ‘whole’ number at the top in the circle, and the 3 and the 6 make up the two ‘parts’ in the two circles underneath. Can they then model this using two different colored objects in their tens frame? Bringing these different techniques together is really important as the children begin to understand how the same number sentence can be represented in lots of different ways.

Thanks for your continued support.
