Topic, Reading, Lexia, Spellings and Mental Maths

Topic

Our next topic will be ‘Movers and Shakers’ This project teaches children about historically significant people who have had a major impact on the world. They will learn to use timelines, stories and historical sources to find out about the people featured and use historical models to explore their significance.  If you would like to get started at home have a hunt around your house and in your local area for memorials that celebrate the lives and achievements of significant people. Examples could include coins, stamps, statues and road names. Take photographs of any that you find to  share with us in the new term.  This is completely optional but we would really like to see what you did so please bring any photos you take into school with you in the new year.

Reading

Please keep reading at home during the holidays.  There’s no better end to a busy day than snuggling up for stories.  We will send home a couple of extra reading books at the end of this week.

Lexia

If your child has a Lexia account (their login details will be in their reading record book) please access their account at home via this link: https://www.lexiacore5.com/?SiteID=3740-7432-0654-5562

Spellings

Words for the first week back are:

see
sea
be
bee
who

Parents: We will now be following the year 2 curriculum for spellings.  The first few weeks mostly focus on homophones – words that sound the same but are spelt differently.  Although these words may seem ‘easy’ to spell it is really important that the children understand the meaning of the different spellings and how to use them correctly in context.  They will need to choose the correct spelling pattern for the word needed to make the sentence make sense when being tested.  Other words are taken from the common exception words for year 2.  The children are being taught strategies for learning spellings as part of their work at school.  Please encourage them to practice at home during the week and carry out an occasional test to prepare them for Friday morning.  When your children are confident spelling the words please encourage them to use them in sentences.   This will help with understanding and using the words in context.  They could also explore more homophones with these spelling patterns and bring them to school to share with us.  They will be tested by writing the words in dictated sentences.
