Thursday 2nd April – Home Learning

Thursday 2nd April – Home Learning

Are you ready for another day of learning? What a silly question. Of course you are, you’re Year 3!

Do as much as you can and if there’s a piece of your child’s learning you would like to share, please feel free to send me a picture or video at t.prior@southill.dorset.sch.uk. If you have any other videos or fantastic pictures to share with the school about anything else you are doing at home, simply email them to Mrs Symonds at media@southill.dorset.sch.uk.

As always, stay safe and have a great day.

Spellings

Remember to keep learning your spellings…

weight

woman

women

accidentally

actually

Challenge- can you use a dictionary in order to find the meaning of each word and write them in your very own impressive sentences?

Reading

Please ensure your children reads daily for at least fifteen minutes. A combination of them reading independently, out loud to an adult and letting them listen to the story being told by the adult is advisable. Simply record any reading in your child’s reading record book. Remember to also quiz your books.

Challenge- As you have already written a film review, why not have a go at a book review as well? Think about how you are going to introduce your review and how you are going to structure it using subtitles.

Writing Task- ‘Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom’

Watch the following video clip.

Background information- Indiana Jones has been sent on a quest to find ‘The Golden Idol’. However to retrieve it, he has to enter ‘The Temple of Doom’. At the end of the video, you saw that switching the idol with a bag of sand did not work…Your task is to write what happens next!

Think about what kind of traps he might encounter as he now begins to leave the temple. Could he be faced with:

-Flying poisonous arrows

-Giant snake pits

-Spikes closing in from the walls

-boulders crashing from the ceiling.

-large cracks in the floor leader to certain death

-eerie sounds coming from the dark tunnels beyond

I have written an example to help you-  Mr. Prior’s Story- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Remember, impressive writing needs…

  • To build tension (short sentences are really good for this)
  • Impressive vocabulary (doom, petrified, poisonous, vicious, excruciating pain)
  •  A range of sentence openers (Suddenly, As quick as a flash, In the blink of an eye, Out of nowhere etc.)
  • A range of punctuation (   )  !   ?   ”     ”  ,   …
  • Describe the character’s thoughts and feelings (frightened, unnerved, unsure, confused)
  • Don’t rush the action- describe in detail

You have two days to complete this so, proof-read your work regularly and produce something you can be extremely proud of. Good luck 🙂

Arithmetic Task- Make 24

First of all, here are the answers to the ‘ordering numbers’ questions set yesterday…

1) 876       342        902      =    342        876        902

2) 654      432        495       =    432       495        654

3) 321       123        278       =   123        278        321

4) 871       879       873       =  871        873        879

5) 2231     3531     999      = 999       2231       3531

6) 543        54       2312      = 54          543        2312

7) 4521     4531    4511      =  4511     4521       4531

8) 323       233      322     =    233      322       323

9) 852        899     801  =     801        852       899

10) 23,432    22,453    22,001    =   22,001       22,453        23,432

For today’s arithmetic task, I would like you to try and make the number 24 using the following numbers. You can use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

3       4        6       8

Challenge- Found a way? Why not challenge yourself and see if there are any other ways you can make the same answer (24).

Jedi Challenge- you have to use all 4 numbers (but only once). Can you still make 24?

Maths No Problem Task- Measuring Time in Hours

Workbook Answers from Tuesday- pg 46

Measuring Time in Hours- Begin by looking at the ‘In Focus’ task on page 73. Look at how many hours have gone by. Again, using the clock, set some more questions for the children to have a go at. Remind them that the hour hand is the small hand (count the hours around the clock).

Textbook- Turn to page 75 and go through the questions together. Read the question carefully and remind children that the minutes stay the same if we are just adding hours. In my experience, children will look at the time 10.31am and be asked ‘what is the time 1 hour later’ and write the answer as 11.00am (when we know it would be 11.31am).

Workbook- Have a go at the questions on page 47. Encourage the children to use their pencil to draw the hour hand going round on the clock so that they can see where it would be both 2 hours and 6 hours later (again, remind them to not forget the minutes).

I will post up the answers on Friday so that you can mark it together 🙂

Topic-based task

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the caldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,

Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing,

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

This week, we are sticking to the theme of poetry and we would love for the children to create their own witch (or wizard) poem. The aim of this is to keep the first two sentences and the last two sentences the same (Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.’ However, we would like the children to innovate the rest of the poem and start getting creative with the ingredients!

Notice how the last two words rhyme? Can you do the same? If you would like to make your poem rhyme, the website RhymeZone is really helpful. Simply pop in a word and it will offer up suggestions of what it could rhyme with.

I’ve written an innovated poem to give you some idea of how it could look.

Remember, poetry takes time. You won’t finish this today. Play around with the words, think of disgusting ingredients and be resourceful.

Here is an example that you can read and magpie ideas from – Witch poem

Challenge- Perhaps have a go at videoing it and perform it like the character.

Challenge 2- Write a short paragraph explaining what the potion would do if you drank it. Remember to use impressive vocabulary and come up with a name.
