Phonics

Today we are going to watch the online Phonics again – lots of you emailed yesterday to say it was a success so thank you!

I would recommend watching the ‘Year 1’ session at 10.30. It has a recap of phase 3 sounds at the beginning before moving onto teach the phase 5 sounds, so there is no need to watch The Receptions video as well unless you would like to. All of these sounds your child has been taught already at school so they should be familiar. We would be recapping all sounds during the summer term and would continue looking at ‘tricky words’ which are also covered in these videos which is great!

The link is below again ….   if you are not able to watch the video at 10.30 you can watch it at another time. After it has been ‘live’ it is then on the ‘Letters and sounds’ youtube channel which can be accessed at any time of the day – Yay!

Follow the same structure that we have been using …

Start off retelling the story – with actions if you have some. You will probably notice this week that your child is becoming much more familiar and confident with the story!

Next go to page 11!  You will see a letter that needs some editing and proving. This is a great way of reinforcing those basics in our ‘every time toolkit.

You might have noticed that I have skipped past a few pages – if you would like to do those extra activities then go for it!! please don’t panic – it is not essential.

Y1-Unit Talk For Writing

Maths No Problem- Chapter 13 Division

In Focus – To begin with tell your child a story about each customer wanting all of the cookies that you can see on the plate, but the only way to make everyone happy is to share them out equally. There are only 6 cookies; how could we share them equally. How many customers are there? Let them discuss this and come up with solutions. Prompt them by asking if the tallest child should get more and whether that would be fair and so on. Ask them how we can be sure to share the cookies equally.  With real objects model to them that sharing them out one by one can be helpful; then count them at the end to make sure everyone got the same number.

Next put 6 objects representing the 6 cookies in 3 rows of 2 on the table. Ask them if they can see how to divide them up just by looking at them. You could draw this in picture form. Remind them your friend said circling rows might be helpful and let them discuss this.

Lets learn and Guided practice- Follow the guidance in your textbook. Use objects that you have at home e.g. toy cars, blocks, cookies!! This activity reinforces the start number – the whole needs to she shared ‘equally’.

Only move onto the workbook if your child is confident with the concept – if not continue with the activity and guided practise. We all learn at different rates so please do not worry.

Workbook – Complete Pages 57 – 61 ‘Sharing equally’. At school the children would try to work through these questions independently with an adult to guide them through what the question is asking for, reading when needed and modelling where to write the answers. If you are able to support this at home that would be great, the aim here is for children to apply the skills they have just practised.
