Reading

It is still important to read at home. 10 – 15 minutes each day will continue to make a big difference to your child’s reading. If you would like to swap your books please email Mrs Woods who will arrange this for you.

Her email address is    cwood@southill.dorset.sch.uk

English / Topic

Today is the last day of making the factfiles. They are looking amazing – I am really pleased that the children have been enjoying learning all about the different types of animals and how to classify them.

Today we are looking at ‘Minibeasts’

Maths No Problem  –  Chapter 15   Numbers to 100

Counting to 100

In Focus – page 68. Ask you child to count the crayons together and find the amount. There are 20 – but tell them you think there are 19 or another number that is close.  Ask them why it was so difficult to count the crayons. Let them discuss this and come up with a few reasons. Now talk about grouping. How can we group them to make it easier.

Use real life objects, if you have crayons great! Promp your child to think about grouping, possibly by saying that your friend said putting the crayons into equal groups would be helpful. Ask them how many they would put in a group to make it easier for them to count. Take all of their answers, but lead them towards putting 10 in one group. Begin counting in tens. Show them the picture of one box of 10, then two, then three and so on. Pay close attention to the ’10 frame’ layout of the pictures to reinforce subitisation. We have used tens frame a lot at school.

Lets learn and Guided practice-  work through the examples on the page. Counting in 10s. Talk about how you are able to do this as all of the crayons are already grouped in tens. You will see above the crayons the words ‘one ten’ two tens’ etc. Count the crayons in tens and then reinforce this, for example. 10,20,30,40   four lots of tens are 10. use your finger to cirlcle one lot of 10, two lots of 10 etc.

Only move onto the workbook if your child is confident with the concept – if not continue with the activity and guided practise. We all learn at different rates so please do not worry.

Workbook complete work book pages 77 – 79. At school the children would try to work through these questions independently with an adult to guide them through what the question is asking for, reading when needed and modelling where to write the answers. If you are able to support this at home that would be great, the aim here is for children to apply the skills they have just practised.
