Running Riot in Rugby!
This afternoon, nine children from Year 5 made their way over to Budmouth Academy to compete in a Tag Rugby Festival and Competition. Although the event was technically for Year 6 pupils, our Year 6s are currently sunning themselves in St Ives—so Year 5 had the opportunity to step up, and my word, did they rise to the occasion!
The afternoon began with a series of skills and drills, where the children developed their ability to dribble with the ball, pass effectively, grab tags to prevent opposing teams from scoring, and of course, how to score a try.
After a quick break, the children put their new skills to the test in a round-robin tournament, competing against other schools in a series of matches. Here’s how we got on:
Southill 3 – 0 Beechcroft
Tries scored by Ellis (x2) and Zeff (1)
Southill 7 – 0 Wyke Regis
Tries scored by Max (x5), Bella (1), and Georgia (1)
Southill 4 – 3 Bincombe
Tries scored by Maxwell (1), Max (1), Filip (1), and Ellis (1)
Southill 4 – 0 Atlantic Academy
Tries scored by Max (x2), Filip (1), and Georgia (1)
Southill 3 – 1 Conifers
Tries scored by Max (x2) and Maxwell (1)
Unbelievably, considering they were up against children a year older than themselves, Southill won every single game! The team played with tremendous spirit, skill, and determination.
A special mention goes to Toby and Eleanor, who not only assisted in several tries but were absolutely integral to our defensive success—constantly ripping tags and stopping opponents in their tracks.
It was a fantastic afternoon, and I couldn’t be prouder of our brilliant Year 5s.
