A Cracking Day of Cricket!
Today, children from Years 5 and 6 headed over to Redlands, joining nine other primary schools from Weymouth to take part in an exciting Cricket Tournament.
The morning kicked off with a series of skill-based cricket stations designed to develop the children’s batting, bowling, fielding, running between the wickets, and catching. I must say, the children were naturals! Many sports leaders and cricket coaches were amazed by their exceptional hand-eye coordination.
At 11:00am, the tournament began. Each game consisted of 8 overs, with children split into batting pairs and every child expected to bowl an over.
Here’s how we got on in the group stages:
(W) Southill 181 – 143 Chickerell
A very convincing start! The children bowled with accuracy and batted with great confidence.
Bincombe 124 – 147 Southill (W)
Another win, and a standout bowling performance from Shukrullah, who impressively took three wickets in a single over!
(W) Southill 177 – 112 Wyke Regis
Some incredible batting from Ashton gave us a strong lead, backed up by great bowling from Eli and Maxwell.
(W) Southill 142 – 89 Conifers
An excellent display of bowling, with Oscar, Gurraag, Alex and Sonny all picking up valuable wickets.
After the group stages, Southill had scored the most runs of any team in the competition and were the only team to win every game!
We then faced St. Augustine’s, who had also topped their group, in the final. Due to time constraints, the match was shortened, with each team bowling just 4 overs. Unfortunately, this may have worked against us. St. Augustine’s had two standout players who were very strong with both bat and ball. Without all 8 of our children getting the chance to bowl, they gained a slight edge, and we narrowly missed out on the win:
St. Augustine’s 134 – 124 Southill
Nevertheless, the children loved the competition and represented the school with pride and great sportsmanship. They were absolute winners in our eyes, and the cricket coaches were so impressed that they’re hoping all of our players will consider (if they haven’t already) joining Weymouth Cricket Club!
A huge thank you to Mr. Frampton for making the journey to capture all the action on camera.
Well done
