Beware the Jabberwock…

This term we have really enjoyed studying The Jabberwock by Lewis Carroll during our first poetry unit of the year in English!

Looking at the narrative told in the poem, we realised the stanzas follow a similar rhyming pattern throughout the tale. There are also portmanteau words to describe the animals and events, these are nonsense words made up by combining two other existing words to make a new one. One of our favourites is ‘gallumphing’ made of ‘galloping’ and ‘triumphing’, it really shows how the character is feeling and moving!

Inspired by The Jabberwock, we are now writing our own information texts about the jubjub bird using some of our own portmanteau words! What a resourceful bunch we are!

And to prove how much we have enjoyed the poem, have a look at our performance of it in the video below.ย  The childen worked so hard to include some really brilliant actions, movement and drama to bring the poem alive, I bet you really feel like you are gallumphing through those borogroves while you are watching it!
