Buddy Letters

Over the past couple of writing lessons, the children have been busy working on something truly special — their buddy letters, written with care and thoughtfulness in preparation for welcoming our new Reception children in September. These letters are more than just pieces of writing; they are warm invitations into our school community, filled with reassurance, excitement, and kindness.

Each child has written a little about themselves, about life at Southill, and what they will do to ensure that our new cohort feels safe, settled and incredibly welcome. The quality of their writing has been outstanding — not just in how well they’ve written, but in the sincerity and compassion behind every word. It’s clear that they truly understand what it means to be a role model.

I have been blown away by the effort they’ve put into these letters. Many have taken the time to present their letters beautifully, with careful handwriting, decorations and thoughtful details. Some even went the extra mile, including handmade or bought trinkets and friendship bracelets to tuck inside the envelopes — small tokens of welcome, but with such big hearts behind them.

As their teacher, I honestly couldn’t be prouder. These children have shown maturity, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility. Their genuine enthusiasm for making someone else feel comfortable and cared for speaks volumes about the kind of individuals they are becoming.

After the summer holidays, they’ll finally meet their buddies in person — and I have no doubt at all that they are going to be simply incredible. Every single one of them is kind, attentive, and ready to lead by example. The new children joining Southill are incredibly lucky to have such thoughtful, compassionate role models waiting for them.

Well done, everyone — you’ve made me, and our whole school, so very proud.
