Give us a Pull-ey!

This week in Year 5 we have extended our learning about forces and mechanisms and have undertaken some really great tests.

Firstly we investigated the impact of different surfaces on the amount of friction produced when an object moves along them.  We pushed cars along the tables, carpet and playground to see which surface enabled the car to travel the furthest.  Which one do you think made the car travel the furthest?

Then we created and used some pulleys to help us lift heavy loads!  We used axles, grooved wheels and wool to help us lift heavy weights between the tables.  The children were interested to see how the pulleys change the direction of a force which makes it easier for us to lift something.  We also learnt that more pulleys make it even easier, but we need more rope!

Well done Year 5, fantastic resourceful and reciprocal investigating in science this week!

It was so fun experimenting with the pulleys .
