Learning About Light 💡

This week, Year 6 were introduced to their new science project Light Theory.

The lesson started with everyone sharing facts they already knew about light, and I was very impressed with all the facts the class could recall. We spent some time exploring different types of light sources and discussed why certain things (such as the moon and mirrors) are not light sources despite the fact they appear to give off light. We learnt that these reflect light from other sources and do not produce their own light.

We then went on to explore how rays of light travel only in straight lines. We conducted an investigation which demonstrated this. We shone a torch at three pieces of card which each contained holes. When the holes were aligned, the light from the torch reached the final card. When the holes were not aligned, the torch did not reach the next card. This showed us that the light can’t travel around the paper, proving that light only travels in straight lines!
