We are continuing our journey through our super fun sound topic in science! This week’s lesson was all about putting what we have learnt into practice!
We got hands-on and made our very own pan flutes using straws. It was a brilliant way to explore how sound works, especially when it comes to pitch.
Each straw was carefully cut to a different length, then lined up from longest to shortest. Once they were taped together, it was time to blow across the tops and see (or hear!) what happened…and it worked!
We have learnt that the shorter the straw, the higher the pitch it produces. That’s because shorter straws make faster vibrations, which means a higher sound. When something is higher pitched, it means the sound waves are vibrating more quickly. Longer straws vibrate more slowly, so they make lower sounds.
We even attempted to flute along to “Three Blind Mice” – slightly out of tune, but entertaining! Our classroom turned into a mini (very out of practice) orchestra!
Year 4, you were fab! Well done ☺️
Laura
Well haven’t these been fun this afternoon, Ostin came home and made one from straws he had to give to his sister too. We’ve had pipe playing all evening. Thank you for another fun day in Year 4 , Laura.
