Marvellous Maths Day in Year 5!
What an action-packed and exciting day we’ve had in Year 5 celebrating all things mathematical! The day kicked off with a real brain workout as the children tackled tricky Sudoku puzzles. Armed with pencils, sharp minds, and their problem-solving skills, they worked together to crack the code and complete the grids. It was fantastic to see the determination on their faces as they used logic, reasoning, and a bit of teamwork to find those elusive missing numbers.
Next, we dived into a focused maths lesson all about angles on a straight line. The children did a brilliant job journaling their understanding — explaining how angles combine to make 180 degrees and identifying key mathematical vocabulary. Then came the real test! They tackled a series of challenging questions involving missing angles, putting their new-found knowledge into action with confidence and accuracy.
After a well-deserved break, the competition heated up with a Times Tables Rockstars showdown! Year 5 had just one hour to answer as many times tables questions as they could — and boy, did they rise to the occasion! With lightning-fast fingers and determined minds, they racked up scores to help boost their class in the ongoing Key Stage Two competition. The excitement doesn’t stop there — the battle continues until 7:15pm tonight, so don’t forget to log in at home and give it your all!
In the afternoon, it was time to get active and put our maths skills to the ultimate test in a thrilling orienteering challenge. Year 5 went head-to-head with Year 6 in a cross-curricular competition. Each child was given a number to locate on their map, which led them to a maths question. After solving it, they returned for the next clue — racing against the clock (and Y6!) to complete as many as possible. Their resilience and teamwork were inspiring, and the prize — an extra afternoon playtime — was very well earned!
To round off our marvellous Maths Day, we gathered in our house teams for a Stormbreak activity. This time, it was all about solving an exciting anagram together — a fun and collaborative end to a day full of thinking, moving, and learning.
And of course, we can’t forget to mention how amazing the children looked in their rockstar costumes — they truly brought the energy and enthusiasm of Maths Day to life!
Well done, Year 5 — we hope you had a fantastic time celebrating the magic of maths. You’ve been absolute stars!
