Southill vs St George’s

After school today, Southill FC faced St George’s in a friendly football match and…WOW! What a game of football it was.

The girls were determined to put in a really good performance and continue their winning form. They got off to a brilliant start, passing the ball with confidence and dictating play. After 3 minutes, a great piece of composure at the edge of the box saw Lucie rifle a blistering shot into the corner. Things got even better for Southill as Sophie dribbled past two and slotted calmly into the bottom corner. St George’s then began to play some good football, however our shape and solid defense meant that they were finding it very difficult to break us down. A counter attack saw Sofia in space and she made that space count with a composed finish. Goals from Lucie and Sophie rounded off an outstanding team performance in the first half. At half time, Southill were winning 5-0.

St George’s rallied at half time. We were expecting a come-back and they delivered in the opening 5 minutes. After some great build-up play, a corner into the box caused confusion and St George’s found themselves clawing a goal back. Southill dusted themselves down, remained calm and knew that they didn’t need to panic. Whilst Josie did have to make a few more excellent saves and Amy, Fern, Paige and Ellouise made some important tackles and clearances early on into the second half, it was Southill who scored the next goal in order to take the wind out of the opposition’s sails. A brilliant through ball from Lenni-Jay saw Sofia smash a stinging shot into the back of the net. It got even better in the latter stages as a beautiful clipped ball over the top by Isabelle saw Sofia score her hat-trick, meaning that the final score ended…

Southill 7 – 1 St George’s

I could not be prouder of the team. They dominated the game, worked together and showed really desire and fighting spirit. They tackled hard, kept possession and played their positions to perfection. My player of the match today was Isabelle. She played in both defense and midfield, didn’t shy away from a tackle and played some brilliant through balls to team-mates further up the pitch resulting in a number of goals for the team.

A huge thank you to St George’s for a great game of football, thank you to parents and carers for cheering us on and thank you to the team who are putting everything we are learning about in training into practice!
