Stone Age mark-making

Today, we linked history and art and listened to two stories about art during the Stone Age. The first was Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson and the second was The First Drawing by Mordicai Gerstein. In both these stories we learned about how the very first drawings were made in caves by Stone Age people. We thought about what materials they might have used to create their drawings. We went out on a walk in the beautiful sunshine to look for mark-making natural materials. Children experimented in their sketch books to see what kinds of marks they could make with different natural materials. They discovered that you could use sticks, mud, leaves, stones and flowers all to create different colours and textures.

We also tried charcoal and found that we could use our fingers to smudge the charcoal and then create more marks with our smudgy fingers!

It was a great art history lesson!
