Tank Museum! Tank Museum!

What an amazing day we had at the Bovington Tank Museum! We explored life in the trenches in World War 1 and thought about the First Christmas at war.  We saw a bronze gift tin given to all the soldiers by Princess Mary in 1914, although it took a few years for all the soldiers to actually receive theirs, as there were so many!  There was some beautiful singing of Silent Night by Year 5.  We also had the opportunity to sit in a tank which actually fought in the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, learning how it was just as deadly inside as it was outside the tank! Did you know there are female and male tanks? And where do you think solders who were in those tanks for hours on end went to the toilet?!  We enjoyed learning about the role horses played in World War 1 and got to try on some stylish, authentically styled uniforms.

We would like to say a great thank you to Mrs Wood, Mrs Aitken and Mrs Randall for volunteering their time to come with us.  We are all very proud of the children and their enthusiasm and respect for this memorable visit to the Tank Museum.  One member of the museum staff said we were the most “switched on and knowledgeable class he had ever had sat in his tank.”  High praise indeed, well done year 5.
