The Return of Rounders!

The Return of Rounders!

Year 5 have hit the ground running (literally!) with the exciting return of rounders this half term. After such an impressive performance from the children in Year 4, we were eager to build on their fantastic foundation by developing their batting, bowling and fielding skills even further—and what a brilliant start it’s been!

We began with a fast-paced warm-up game that had everyone laughing and focused. Children ran around the outside of the rounders pitch, weaving around the four bases in the correct direction, while one child stood blindfolded in the batter’s box. After eight seconds, the blindfolded player called out a base—if anyone was standing on that base, they were out! This simple but effective activity helped everyone get used to the layout of the pitch, the importance of running the correct route, and avoiding cutting corners or sneaking inside the bases.

Next, it was time to fine-tune our bowling skills. In teams of three, two bowlers took turns aiming at a static bat, working on accuracy, control and consistency. The goal? To bowl between waist and shoulder height and successfully strike the bat. This gave every child the chance to focus on technique and precision—a key part of successful rounders gameplay.

Then came the main event: 3-ball rounders! The children were split into four teams, rotating through batting and fielding positions. The rules were simple but thrilling—each batter faced three balls, and after the third, the fielding teams had to work together to get all three balls into the hoop before the batter completed a round. It was fantastic to see the communication, teamwork, and quick thinking on display as each team strategised to beat the batter!

Confidence was sky-high throughout the session, with so many children showing real progress in both individual skills and team play. Whether batting, bowling, or sprinting across the bases, Year 5 gave it their all and showed just how far they’ve come.

A huge congratulations to Freddie’s team, who took the win in our 3-ball rounders competition—your teamwork and determination were brilliant to watch!

We can’t wait to see how Year 5 continue to grow in rounders over the next few weeks. Game on!
