Today, we had a really lovely afternoon finding out what it will be like to move on up to Year 6. First of all, we spent some time having a great chat learning all about what to expect in the autumn term. We discussed what an exciting time it is in Year 6, and how much fun we can have in our final year at Southill. The class were excited and receptive to everything that is to come. Personally, I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to work with such a lovely year-group.
After that we had a heart-warming “Class Compliments” session, where all the pupils wrote generous, kind words about one another on personalised sheets with their pictures on. This will form a really nice display around the entrance to the classroom. They were then given their letters from year 6! Our current class have been devotedly writing letters to the class over the past few days, assuring them of what a great time it is in their final year.
Following that, we had a hot but fun play session outside, then came back in to create some class bunting to further personalise the room for when the pupils arrive in September. The time flew by, but it’s safe to say that we all can’t wait to get started next term!
Teaching staff arrangements for September will be as follows:
● Reception: Mel, Mrs. Kench and Lucy
● Year 1: Laura, Kelly and Mrs. Harris
● Year 2: Emma, Emily and Emily
● Year 3: Andrea, Mrs. Wallis and Sarah
● Year 4: Kirsty and Sue
● Year 5: Tom and Mrs. Murray
● Year 6: Dan and Mrs. Walkinshaw
What will it be like in Year 6?
Year 6 is a fantastic time for pupils to shine as the oldest in the school. They’re encouraged to set a great example, supported every step of the way by a team built on mutual respect and trust. Year 6 pupils play a key role in Southill life. They form strong bonds with their Reception buddies, help set up assemblies, support clubs and events if they choose to and stay closely connected with the staff and friends they’ve known for years. They’ll work hard in preparation for their SATs in May, with staff ensuring they’re ready and confident. Beyond the tests there is so much to look forward to. They will learn from a vibrant, engaging curriculum plus end-of-year highlights like Primary College and the unforgettable trip to St Ives. There are also two other amazing trips and lots of enrichment opportunities in the form of clubs, sports and music events. We are also planning to bring more performing opportunities to year 6 life, with a Christmas Sing and a Summer Show! It’s a year of growth, celebration and big steps forward and we’re with them all the way.
Reading and Maths
Our class reading sessions begin every day from 8.45am and straight after the register, so it’s important that your child is here on time and has their reading book and Reading Record with them every day. Please try to read as much and as often as you can with your child over the summer holiday, it really does make a huge difference to their success at school. The Summer Reading Challenge is running again via local libraries and is a really great way to help keep your child interested in reading over the holiday. Please also encourage your child to practise their times tables over the summer holidays. They can do this using their TTRockstar logins and visiting the website on the link below:
How do I pass on important information?

There are regular opportunities to meet and discuss your child’s progress throughout the year, in addition to this you can contact me on Class Dojo or make an appointment through the school office at any point throughout the year.
Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to a really great year together in Year 6!
