Year 1 … the scientists!

This week in Year 1 we have had our first ever science lesson!!

The children have been thinking about making predictions and looking at what ‘fair test’ means.

Sadly, the chocolate coated malteser didn’t explode when it was dropped into a glass of water… it did however float. Which led us to think about why some things float and other sink.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more exciting it was the the half  – coated malteser’s turn! This one started to change once it was in the water. Lots of us thought it was melting, but there was no heat as the water was not warm, which led question… What is happening? We talked about ‘dissolving’ and how the change only happened once the malteser was in the water which is a liquid.

Throughout the lesson we shared our ideas and questions, linking our previous knowledge and using this to support our predictions. We talked about what a ‘reaction’ is, and how the temperature of the water and type of material could make a difference to what might happen.

Everyone worked really hard and had lots of amazing ideas, I was really impressed with some of the vocabulary that was being used to share and reason ideas.

Well done Year 1 – super scientists in the making!
