Digging Up the Past

Year 4 became archaeologists for the morning when they joined the Dorset Diggers Archaeology Group on Thursday at their ‘dig’ in Stones Ground Field, Tumbledown Farm adjacent to Southill School. The children studied a variety of artefacts either discovered in the field or at sites nearby. They were asked to consider which relics showed signs of human activity and which were purely natural. They also attempted to order the artefacts in terms of their age which proved somewhat tricky – some of the finds dated back a mere one hundred years while others were closer to 100 million! The temptation to jump into one of the archaeology pits was resisted by all and several children left the site determined to one day become archaeologists themselves!
