Home Learning

20th April

Welcome back to our daily home learning!

Picture of the day writing challenge: Write a sentence about this picture. Remember to use your sounds for each word and keep checking your sentence as you write. (Grown-ups, remember to let them try to write independently – words do not have to be spelled as we would spell them – they probably won’t know how to write ‘monkey’ so let them sound it out.) For a challenge, try to extend your sentence by using the word and to write two ideas. You could even write two sentences. Try starting your sentence with I or The.

Phonics: Moving on to phase 4 of our phonics journey. To help us with this new learning, please watch the Alphablocks video about Letter Blends. It is mostly for parents/guardians to explain how we approach this next phase but feel free to watch it with your children too.

It explains that we will be learning about letters that blend together but don’t make a new sound (unlike sh which is a digraph and makes a new sound). Blends can be at the beginning or the end of a word. Click on the link below, then scroll down to the green section – Letter Blends.

When sounding out and writing words from this phase, it is helpful to use a phoneme frame to make sure you hear all sounds in the words. A simple frame can be drawn like this one below. Each sound goes in its own box in the frame. The children are familiar with using this.

You will need 4 boxes for most of the words we will make, and each box will have 1 sound in it. Try making these words together – sound them out and write them in your own frame. Sound them out carefully to hear all of the sounds. The most difficult sounds to hear are the 3rd sounds in these words.

tent       bend      lump      bump     jump

Here is one that I have written. The letter blend is at the end of the word – nt blend together but you can still hear their normal sounds.

Reading: Read this comic from Phonics Play Comics – look out for some letter blends at the ends of the words. You could try writing some of the words yourself. The comic is called Moon Camping.

Summer Topic

Our topic for this half-term is Animal Adventures – an outline of our learning can be seen below and is accessible through our website. Each week there will be some activities and challenges linked to our topic.

Book of the week: This week we will base some of our learning around this story – Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreaea. It is a noisy collection of animal poems. Here is a link to the Book Trust website where you can read along with the book. https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/rumble-in-the-jungle/

There is also a fun Jungle Picture Maker activity too! https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/jungle-picture-maker/

Other Activities:

  • Drawing challenge: follow these instructions to draw a picture of a lion. Add some colour and maybe some scenery around your picture – be creative!

Fact Finding: Can you find out 3 interesting facts about lions? Look in a book or have a look on the internet. Chat together about these facts.

Finally: We would usually go outside to explore on a Monday afternoon – try to get outside for a walk if you can . Try looking out for different colours around you. Can you see anything the same colour as any of the animals in Rumble in the Jungle?

Have a great day exploring!
