Another Victory for the Mighty SPS

Another Victory for the Mighty SPS

After an extremely wet spring term, it was so satisfying to see football back on the top field to kick-start the summer. Today, Southill Primary faced Atlantic Academy in a friendly football match.

Southill dominated the game the moment the whistle blew. The passing from box-to-box and the movement off the ball resulted in wave after wave of attack. After 5 minutes, a quick throw-in to our centre back Reed resulted in him playing a great pass which cut though both Atlantic’s midfield and defense. It landed straight into Ashton’s feet and his lethal touch and shot gave the keeper no chance. After the goal, Southill really found their rhythm. Atlantic could not take the ball off of us and were chasing shadows for most of the first half. Mason, Eli and Max were dictating play in the middle with their short passes and through balls down the channels. After 15 minutes Mason (our player of the match) played a great through ball to Albert who shielded the ball, gave the defender the cold shoulder and then fired a right-footed shot hard and low into the bottom-left corner of the net. Despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball, the power on the shot resulted in Southill going into half time two goals up.

After a quick swig of water, the game continued in the same vein of form. Reed, Oliver and Corey were always looking to play short passes round the back in order to help Southill find more space in the middle of the pitch. This opened the game up for the likes of Eli and Noah on the wings to drive at the defense. A long goal kick from Noah resulted in a mix-up at the back and the ball landed at Noah K’s feet. His composure to lift his head up and play a delicious through ball to Albert resulted in another goal in the opening few minutes of the second half. A few stoppages in play resulted in the game becoming a little more stop and start, but Southill remained determined to continue playing well. Atlantic grew in the game in the final few minutes and a lucky ricochet fell to the feet of their striker. After a clash of legs inside the box, Atlantic were awarded a penalty. It was a great penalty, however Noah did get a glove to it and very nearly pushed the ball around the post!

The final score…

It was a great match to watch and for the first time in a long time, I was able to watch as a spectator! Nell (an ex-pupil of Southill) is doing her referee qualification and kindly agreed to officiate the game. She did a magnificent job. Both teams were fully of admiration and respect for her. Thank you, Nell!

I would also like to thank Mr. Frampton for capturing some great pictures of the game, every parent, grandparent, brother and sister who came to cheer on the mighty Southill and the team for putting on an excellent performance for our viewing pleasure!
