Expressionism in Year 5

We have been loving Art Week so far in Year 5 where we have been focusing on Expressionist art.  In Expressionist art, the use of colour is highly intense and non-naturalistic. The application of colour is freely applied and textural.  Yesterday, we had a go at colour matching portrait images painted by expressionists, using just the primary colours and black and white.

Today we learnt a how some artists combine photos, colour and text to add meaning and interest to their work.  Based on what the children know about Expressionist artists’ use of colour, Year 5 created colour schemes for each image based on the feeling or emotion they felt it portrayed. Some wonderful pieces of art were created and then text added to enhance it further.  Well done Year 5.
