Year 3’s final blog of 2023!

Yesterday, Year 3 had a Geography day….yes a whole day of studying maps, learning the 8 compass points, reading four-figure grid references and even learning about latitude and longitude!

Building on what they learned at Leeson House, we started off by finding different locations on an ordnance survey map and working out what the grid reference for each location was, including Southill! A super start from Year 3!

Next, we arrived at a ‘funfair’ and had to work out which location we would end up at (some locations included the dodgems, hoopla and even the high striker!) by following different compass directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW). The children worked in pairs to do this and definitely rose to the challenge of quite a tricky activity!

After lunch, we began learning about latitude and longitude. The children used globes to find the lines of latitude and longitude before finding the approximate coordinates for different cities around the world.

To end the day, the children used atlases to locate capital cities of countries within Europe and record the names of them on their own maps of Europe. I was really impressed with how well the children tackled this final activity – what a fab day we had!

I can’t believe this is our final blog of 2023!

I hope you all have a happy, healthy and restful Christmas break and I look forward to welcoming you all back to school in 2024!

Thank you all for the extremely kind and thoughtful Christmas cards and gifts and of course your continued support throughout this term – it is so very appreciated by us both.

Merry Christmas to you and your families, Year 3!

Miss Hutton and Mrs Walkinshaw 🙂
