It’s All Athen-ing in Year 5!

We are really enjoying our new History project, Groundbreaking Greeks!

We began by looking at what makes historical artefacts and research either a primary or secondary source of evidence and have learned that an Ancient Greek vase is primary evidence yet a history textbook is secondary evidence.

Using these sources of evidence, we then looked at the 6 different periods of Ancient Greek History and have compared them – did you know there was a Dark Age in Ancient Greece which lasted 300 years where there is no evidence of anything happening? Everybody and everything just disappeared?!

This week we have studied the Greek states in more detail and looked at how the geography of Ancient Greece made states develop in different places and form in different ways.

To finish this week, we have looked at how some sources of historical evidence can be unreliable or incorrect. We used our knowledge of democracy in Ancient Greece to correct an Historians report which had some inaccuracies in it. Then we built our own Parthenon to display all our knowledge of democracy in Ancient Greece!

What fantastic Historians you are Year 5, well done!
