Marvellous Minibeasts!

We began this week with a minibeast hunt in our school grounds, exploring three habitats: the hedgerow, woodland walk and the garden. We learnt that within a habitat, there are many smaller habitats called microhabitats. These are different to the surrounding area. For example, we found ants underneath a stone (microhabitat) in the garden (habitat). Using an identification key, we also spotted and could name snails, flies, woodlice, beetles, spiders and even a centipede!

Working extremely carefully, we observed the minibeasts that we found and made line drawings. We noticed how they moved and which other creatures that were nearby. After a short time, all minibeasts where returned to their microhabitats.

Later in the week, we used a variety of materials and components to create our own imaginary minibeasts in DT. Having learnt about camouflage and warning colours on Thursday, we were able to update our minibeasts with these important features.

To teach others about these mysterious creatures, we wrote information texts in English – explaining where they can be found, what they look like and what they eat.

We can’t wait to discover more minibeasts on our trip to Lorton Meadows next week!
