Reversing changes in Year 5!

Our science project this term has taken our learning about properties if materials to  new levels! We began by looking at the different properties of materials and their ability to keep things warm. We tested the thermal insulating properties of bubble wrap, space blanket and felt to see which worked best to keep our hot water warm. We then looked at dissolving and how some solids can be dissolved and some can not. Ask us about our knowledge of scientific vocabulary and how soluble, solvent and solute are related!

We used great scientific skills of measuring to ensure our tests were fair and we only changed certain variables. After dissolving some solids, we wondered if we could get them back so we investigated evaporation as a method of retrieving solids form a solvent. We found that water does evaporated and we leaves salt and coffee behind!

Another method of separating materials is filtration. Even some tiny, microscopic particles which look completely dissolved can be separated from a solvent, have a look at our before and after water samples when we tried filtration ourselves!

Well done Year 5, amazing resourceful and reciprocal investigating in science!
