Year 6 Handball Competition

Year 6 Handball Competition

This afternoon, seven Year 6’s headed over to Budmouth Academy in order to participate in a Handball Tournament against other schools in the local area. We began by warming up with some Budmouth sports leaders and learning the rules of the game. After a quick slurp of water, the children took to the pitch ready and raring to go. Here’s how we got on…

Southill 8 – 1 Beechcroft

In our first match, the children settled very quickly into the contest. They played with gritted determination and passed and moved effectively around the pitch. Lexi and Isabelle did an incredibly impressive job in defense and set up various attacks by playing a clever ball over the top of the opposition. Harry was finding space around the edge of the semi-circle and seemed to dispatch every chance he got! In the second half, Alfie had to pull off some important saves as Beechcroft grew into the game. He did so well in fact that Beechcroft were only able to score 1 goal in the entire match.

Southill 5 – 6 Conifers

Conifers proved to be a more difficult contest. Two of their players were very strong, however I felt we played better as an entire team. At half time, we were losing 3-1, however Southill played incredibly well in the second half. Sophie, Evan and Lexi did a fantastic job of marking the two dangerous players out of the game and Southill were very unfortunate not to win the game. The Conifers goalkeeper pulled off some unbelievably saves meaning that we couldn’t quite turn the game around.

Southill 5 – 5  Holy Trinity

In our final match of the afternoon, Southill played Holy Trinity. We started brightly, playing very successful short passes up the court and Harry was able to score two quick goals meaning that we took a strong lead. Daniel was in goal for this game and he pulled off some unbelievable stops. He also played several successful passes over the top of the opposition players in order to get us up the pitch quickly. Holy Trinity grew into the game and at half time, the score was 3-1 to Southill! The second half proved difficult. Whilst we were able to score another two goals, Holy Trinity just wouldn’t give up. A last-minute goal resulted in us drawing the game 5-5.

I am so proud of the children today. Despite the scorching heat, they played magnificently and showed a real togetherness and competitive spirit. It was an easy afternoon for me as I was simply able to admire just how well the children played as a team and how effectively they communicated to each other. Well done, Year 6!
