Artefacts from the Titanic!

This afternoon, Year 6 turned into historians as they examined a range of artefacts related to the sinking of the Titanic. We started by looking at the artefacts and asking a range of questions which we hoped to answer later in the lesson. We tried hard to make sure our questions would enable us to learn more about not only life on board of the Titanic but also the sinking of the ship.

After sharing our questions and identifying the artefacts, we started to consider what these suggested about different parts of the Titanic.  We learnt how lots of people came to together to support one another during a very tragic time, for example Wallace Hartley, a professional violinist, played his final song as the ship sunk, and that he was also one of the musicians who worked in first-class accommodation. We also discovered how wireless stations on ships were not manned 24/7 during the time of the Titanic and this later became the law to ensure SOS calls could be received at any part of the time.

The children worked incredibly hard to ask historically-valid questions and then use the information to make links with this time in history.

Well done, Year 6 – brilliant reciprocal and reflective learning!
