Forest School week 9 – Summer Solstice

This week was all about the summer solstice.  Midsummer is around the 21st June and is when the sun shines in the sky at the highest point of the year, when we have the shortest night and longest day.  The word solstice mean ‘sun stand still’ in latin.  After the summer solstice, the sun’s journey through the sky will once again begin to shorten, though the days still feel warm.  We began by learning about the summer solstice and then had a go at bathing in the light and warmth of the sun.  It was very relaxing.

Then we made fairy offerings to leave out in an area of our choice.  This is a ritual for summer solstice.

We then had a go at creating some summer sunshine weaving using willow.

Bird feeders were restocked and a Forest Schooler had brought in some food and feeders from home – how wonderful.

We also made come dandelion drop scones.  Yes, they contained the petals of 15 dandelions and they went down a treat.  Everyone cooked their own pancake and then ate it.  We didn’t use a fire as it is getting to dry to light a fire safely and we don’t want to risk starting a wildfire. Instead, we cooked on a gas stove.
