Wow!  What an amazing end to the half term of Forest School. Fires, smores, muddy kitchen, knots, ropes and a nature interruption by 2 birds of prey!  (No photo though as we were just watching!)

We learnt to assume the ‘respect position’ next to the fire – this ensures we stay safe and can move away quickly from the fire if we need to.

For fires, there needs to be three elements –  fuel, a spark and oxygen.  For our fuel, we collected dead wood in three sizes; matchsticks, pencils and chunky monkeys!  Oxygen is in abundance and then for the spark ….. our brand new steels.

Now steels are tricky enough to light fires, but brand new ones are even harder as they’ve no friction until you scrape the top layer off.  This was very hard indeed.  Where there moans? No!  Was there grit and determination?  Yes!  All of the adults were so proud of how everyone was so resilient, managed the risks safely and behaved so responsibly.  It took a long time to light the cotton wool but EVRYONE did it and no one gave up.  Super persevering Foret Schoolers!

Then it was time for s’mores.    This of course starts with cooking the marshmallows over the fire.

Can you tell that they were a hit? 

Loads of other thing were happening as well as all the campfire cooking.  2 hours just doesn’t feel long enough!  Today whizzed by.

It is great to know that birds will be fed over half term with our bird feeders.  You know its been a fun time outside when all that is left is this.

Thank you so much to FOSS for funding the fire pit.  It has now been well and truly christened and ready for any other classes in the school to visit when ever they can.
