Instructions – How To Grow a Giant Beanstalk

This week in Year 2 we had a mystery visitor who left some things in our classroom for us to discover! We found a watering can, a pot with some soil in, a spade and a sparkly envelope labelled ‘open me.’ We talked about the objects and the children suggested who might have left them here: a magical fairy, a Halloween character, The Giant or Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, or maybe Mr Mason! We decided that they were left by Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk. We opened the letter and found some instructions – how to grow a giant beanstalk. We sat down together and read them – talking about the bossy verbs used, the way the text was set out with headings, and how instructions are different from stories. We practised telling the instructions using actions to help us.

We are continuing to learn about bossy verbs this week, such as move, get, put, do, and will add adverbs to these to make our sentences even better, such as move quickly, go quietly, and put it down gently.

When we have had lots of practise using verbs and adverbs, the children will write their own instructions. Great work, Year 2!
