Marvellous Maths!

A new term equals a new topic for our Thursday assemblies as we add focus to Maths – celebrating all the many elements involved in being a marvellous mathematician without subtracting any of the usual fun and excitement of our themed assemblies!  Here at Southill, Maths is ‘no problem’ as we know a trick (or four) to help us to problem solve, in the form of our BLP (building learning powers) as being resilient, resourceful, reflective and reciprocal certainly helps.

Mr Prior kick-started these assemblies with Probability, which is the likelihood of something happening.  We actively explored the chances of heads or tails when tossing a coin (1/2 as a fraction) and also rolling different totals with two dice (slightly more than 1/2!). We learnt that for this 7 was the most popular outcome, followed by 6 or 8 and were able to prove that 8 was the most popular when we put this to the test.  Note to parents: the children are well equipped to win a bet with their knowledge of probability when playing this game.  Choose wisely!

We finished our assembly by looking at other scenarios involving probability. This included Monopoly (so many of us play this at home), England winning the Euros (the chance of which proved heavily based on personal opinion), the weather being sunny tomorrow (perhaps the chances are quite low… unfortunately) and winning the National Lottery, which is actually a 1 in 175,223,510 chance.  Wow.

It was a very fun and active assembly with the buzz of Maths fuelling our brains, prompting much discussion. Thank you to Mr Prior and all children who took part.  We look forward to what next week may bring!
