Marvellous Measuring!

In Maths this week, Year 3 have began learning about Length. Firstly, we had a discussion about how often we measure things on a daily basis, and we couldn’t quite believe how long the list was!!! The children came up with some brilliant examples including: measuring ingredients in the kitchen, measuring the size of their feet for new shoes, their height and the amount of material needed to make their school uniforms!

Next, they were given the challenge of measuring the length and width of our classroom! They used a variety of measuring equipment including a trundle wheel, measuring tape and metre rulers. They found out that the classroom was 9m and 60cm in length and 5m wide!

Today, the children measured objects around the classroom using rulers, making sure they started at 0cm to ensure their measurements were accurate. They also had the task of sorting objects in to 3 groups; objects that were shorter than 10cm, objects that had a length between 10cm and 1m (which the children now know is equal to 100cm) and objects that were longer than 1m/100cm.

The best part about these lessons was how hard the children worked but also how much fun they had; working reciprocally and most importantly doing some marvellous measuring!

Really proud of you, Year 3 – well done!

Miss Hutton 🙂

George loved measuring the classroom and told us all about it. What fun! Thanks Miss Hutton and Mrs Walkinshaw.
