Move over Aristotle

Ancient civilisations thought the Earth was flat, cylinder shaped or square.   The Ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras (c570-490BC), proposed the Earth must be spherical.  Aristotle (384 -322BC) used observations to determine that the earth was in fact spherical.    Today, in Year 5, we tested Aristotle’s theory.

We observed some ships (rubber boats) sailing into the horizon (on a rubber ball) and noted that the hull disappeared first and the top of the funnel last.  If the Earth were flat, the whole ship would appear gradually smaller until it could no longer be seen.

Year 5 are pleased to announce that after our thorough investigations, that both Pythagoras and Aristotle were correct.  The earth is spherical.  Phew – thank goodness for that!
