A DRAMATIC Way to Start the Year…

A DRAMATIC Way to Start the Year…

This morning, Years 3 and 4 were very excited to begin working on our rendition of Shakespeare’s infamous play Romeo and Juliet. We began the morning by familiarising ourselves with the story and watching some animated episodes of the tale. The children then made their way into the school hall in order to participate in a broad range of DRAMATIC activities. Here are some of the games we played…

Stop and Go – Children had to make full use of the space, teaching them to use the stage and stop in a dramatic way when prompted.

Quick Pics – Children walked around the stage and were given something to act out using their bodies in groups.

Round Here We – Children began to familiarise themselves with the two families- The Capulets and the Montagues. Whilst walking around the streets of Verona, they greeted their family members with a handshake and a smile and looked at opposing family members in disgust and distain!

Playground Splat – In this task, children were given a setting (e.g. a bus stop) and had to use their bodies in order to create the scene. They had to explain what they were before entering the setting and then freeze.

20-Minute Story- The children then began to look at some of the characters from our tale. They were given different character fact files to look at and had to come up with an action for their character. They then explained to the rest of the group which character they had and what they were like. We intend on then using the actions they came up with for each character in the performance at the Pavilion! We then went through the story, acting out our actions for each character as they were introduced.

It was a really promising start and the children were all really enthusiastic to join in and take part which was great to see.

More information regarding costumes and lines will be following very soon. In the meantime, tickets are available now for the performance at Weymouth Pavilion.
