Maths Week with Year 1

This week Year 1 have had a great time trying out lots of different activities during Maths Week!

At the beginning of the week we looked at positional language. The class geared themselves up for some running races where we handed out rosettes for ‘first, second, third, fourth and fifth place’. We then took this learning back into the classroom and explored ‘places’ beyond five linking this to the order of numbers.

On Tuesday we took park in an online story all about doubling run by Maths Week England. The children watched a story named ‘Cuthbert Sees Double’ which was all about doubling numbers and what this means. We talked about how it means ‘the same again’ and how we will be exploring this later in year 1.

Towards the end of the week we focused on numbers to 20 – specifically ‘teen’ numbers. We have been looking closely at how these numbers have a ten in them and have explored the composition of ‘teen’ numbers using the vocabulary of ‘how and __ more’. You can see some photos of us below playing teen number sweet shops where we built teen numbers from number sentences which always started with 10. We will continue our work on ‘teen’ numbers next week and throughout year 1.

A brilliant Maths week in Year 1 – I can’t wait for Maths Week next year!!
