Spring Term Forest School Session 1

We had a lovely start to our Spring Term Forest School.  We made friendship bracelets and made up our Forest School names.  We have an Elephant, Meerkat, Giraffe, Ant, Lion, Jaguar, Ostrich, Dolphin, Cheetah, Anaconda, Ant-Eater and Jellyfish.  How imaginative!

Then it was time for a seeking game set within the boundaries we discussed together.  There was some great hiding!  We also had a game of duck, duck goose around the fire pit remembering to ‘log off’ before running around the outside of the fire pit.  This is a really important skill to learn in preparation for having fires in later sessions.

Next up was talking about how to stay safe at Forest School and also having a think about creating our own Forest School Code.  We were really impressed by the children’s ideas.  They were –

*to have fun

*everyone can play and have a choice

*have the freedom to find a quiet space in nature if they want to

*take care of our Forest School area and look after nature

*listen to one another

It was then time for some free play.  There were games of tag in the woods, bracelet making, some excellent firewood prepping and also the muddy kitchen which served up delights such as banana soup, hot chocolate, cake and lots of other creative food.

Before we knew it, we were covered in mud, worn out and we were out of time.  Just before we went back in to school, we reflected on our first session and what we had enjoyed and plan next week’s session together.  Games in the woods, wand making, hammocks and den building were requested but the most popular idea was to have some hot chocolate.

What a fabulous start to this term’s Forest School.  All the adults were really impressed with how children looked out for and cared for one another and worked as a team … and it is only week 1!  Wow, what will they be doing by week 12?  Well done to all the children!
