Constellations, Curiosity and Chaos

We had a real treat today in Year 5 as we were visited by the wonderful Professor Lee - a true science fanatic who brought an explosion of enthusiasm (and a few actual explosions) to our classroom!

She kicked off the session by telling us why children make the best scientists: they love to talk (no arguments there) and ask endless questions (not just “Are we there yet?”).

Then came a surprise: a science-themed song to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”. The room filled with voices singing:

Science is all around us, in everything we see.
It's in you and it's in me.
When we eat our dinner, or look up to the stars,
Science is fun — the best by far!

With spirits high, Professor Lee revealed the theme of the day’s workshop: SPACE. Year 5 practically levitated with excitement as they shared the galaxies of knowledge they remembered from last half term. Doctor Lee was stunned into silence by some of the incredible facts the children rattled off - clearly our budding astronomers were ready for lift-off.

Our first activity explored the planets and their mind-boggling size differences. Volunteers came up to hold planet posters scaled relative to one another - always an eye-opener when you see just how tiny the rocky planets look beside the giant, swirling gas planets!

Next, we journeyed to the stars. Professor Lee introduced us to a planisphere, a clever tool that shows which constellations are visible in the night sky depending on the time of year. Sticking with the constellation theme, the children grabbed black card and coloured pens to design their own constellation artwork. After drawing their star patterns, they carefully poked holes through the card so that when held to the light… the stars shone. MAGIC.

For our grand finale, we investigated shooting stars. Using baking powder and vinegar, Doctor Lee created a chemical reaction inside a small container. After a dramatic countdown, the “star” blasted into the air and shot straight toward the hall ceiling - causing me to jump out of my skin and yelp like a startled toddler mid-tantrum. A moment the children will not let me forget.

A huge thank you to Doctor Lee for such an interactive, exciting and unforgettable workshop. Year 5 loved every second and we can’t wait to welcome her back for our next scientific adventure in the spring term!
