Thursday 15 October 2026 RELEASE THE KRAKEN! Beware! Something monstrous is lurking beneath the waves... and our Book Talk group has been diving into the deep!This week in Book Talk, we have been sinking our teeth into the thrilling story Deadly Deep by Jennifer Killick and things have taken a TERRIFYING turn!Picture the scene... A group of friends are enjoying a school trip aboard a cruise ship in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a lot actually! Suddenly, a deafening BANG rocks the ship, sending some of the characters tumbling overboard into the mysterious depths below. GULP! What could be lurking beneath the surface?As we examined the book's rather sinister front cover, we spotted some enormous tentacles and a pair of menacing eyes staring back at us. This sparked a fascinating discussion about one of the ocean's most legendary monsters... Thursday 1 October 2026 Yeast is a BEAST! This afternoon, we continued our adventures into our topic of Living Things and Their Habitats. So far, we've looked at classifying animals (including vertebrates and invertebrates), classification keys and plants, and now we have begun exploring the weird and wonderful world of microorganisms!We started by discussing what microorganisms actually are, with the prefix ‘micro-' being a rather big clue to something very small! We talked about the use of microscopes and discovered that microorganisms can be both helpful and harmful.Most of the time, when they are in the right place, the majority of microorganisms are not harmful to people. In fact, they often do a great deal of good, from breaking down waste to helping us make bread. We couldn't live without them!However, some microorganisms can be harmful and make us ill. Some can enter our digestive system and cause illness, while others can give us a cold. Certain microorganisms can also cause infectious diseases, such as chic

Wednesday 30 September 2026 Computing across the Classroom!? This half term, we have been looking at communication through computing. We discovered that IP addresses, a code that strangely has three dots but somehow manages to look far more complicated than it needs to, allow routers to find webpages so that we can access information, watch videos and do all the other things we enjoy online.We also looked at data packets and how information sometimes needs to be shared in smaller instalments due to the size of files. For example, on Class Dojo, we can only upload a maximum of 20 photos at a time. Even the internet has its limits!We then discussed the many different ways we communicate online, including video calls, mobile phones, messages and much more. This led us nicely onto the children's main challenge.Working with a partner, the children were tasked with creating a Google Slideshow about a country. Sounds straightforward enough, right? Tuesday 22 September 2026 You've Been...CLASSIFIED! Our new science topic this half term is all about living things and their habitats and we have wasted no time getting up close and scientific with the animal kingdom!We have been studying animals carefully, spotting their characteristics and using these clues to work out how they can be classified. We've explored vertebrates and invertebrates and investigated what makes a mammal different from a bird, an amphibian different from a reptile and an arachnid different from other arthropods. Turns out, in the animal kingdom, it really does pay to know who has a backbone!We have also been getting to grips with classification keys, learning how carefully chosen questions can separate animals according to their distinguishable features. Sounds simple enough... until you actually have to make one!After practising last week, the children were set the challenge of using everything they had learned to classify 10 random animals. Monday 21 September 2026 Zombierella This week in Book Talk, we are sinking our teeth into Zombierella by Joseph Coelho! This deliciously dark twist on the classic Cinderella tale follows Cinderella, who meets a rather unfortunate end before the Shadow of Death brings her back to life for three nights as Zombierella!We began today by unpicking some of the weird, wonderful and gruesome vocabulary used in the first chapter. Tomorrow, we will delve deeper into the story, exploring key themes, discussing the author's clever language choices and making predictions about what might happen next.Later in the week, the children will put their reading skills to the test by answering comprehension questions before we move on to something particularly gruesome... zombie poetry! The children will be ZOMBIFIED and challenged to imagine themselves as one of the undead. Using sentences of three, repetition and their senses, they will describe the revolting sights, stomach-churning smells and spine-tingling sounds of a zombie. Expect dang

Wednesday 16 September 2026 BLP, Buddies and BLUEY!? This afternoon, we continued our PSHE learning by brushing up on our Learning Powers. We reintroduced Ninja Nutmeg, Captain Shelby, Sir Owlington and Agent Buzzbee to the class, unpicking what they represent and how important it is to follow in their footsteps when completing learning tasks.When we develop our ability to be resilient, reflective, resourceful and reciprocal, we are truly prepared for learning!In order to put the children's Learning Powers to the test, we split them into four groups, with each group focusing on a different area. Four children were chosen to dress up as the characters to really hammer home the purpose of each task. Here is what each group got up to...ResilienceIn Captain Shelby's group, the children were shown a path drawn in chalk on the playground. They were then blindfolded and partnered up with someone who had to direct them safely to the end. The catch? If they stepped on the line or outside of it, they had to go all the way back to the beg

Wednesday 9 September 2026 We are READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE! Lights, camera, PSHE!This afternoon, Year 6 explored three very important words that sit at the heart of everything we do in school: READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE!We began by thinking about what our school rules actually look like in action. Being READY means being prepared to learn, listening carefully and always trying our best. We discussed how our body language can show that we are ready too. Good eye contact, attentive listening and our brilliant ‘Give Me Five' are all simple ways to show that our brains are switched on and we are ready to go!Next came RESPECTFUL. We talked about showing kindness to everyone, treating people equally and remembering that respect can be shown in lots of little ways. Using good manners, listening when somebody else is speaking and taking care of equipment and resources all matter. Thursday 3 September 2026 Well...Well...Well...If it isn't Year 6! What a first day back!It was so lovely seeing the children looking pristine and proper in their school uniforms this morning, excitedly making their way up to the classroom ready to begin their final year at Southill.While the classroom itself remains the same as last year, the space has been completely transformed thanks to the hard work and dedication of some incredible volunteers. A MASSIVE thank you to Lisa, Hannah, Eileen and Lucy who gave up some of their summer holidays to help create an awesome space for the children to learn, grow and make memories this year. We were also treated to some brand-new chairs and seeing the children's faces as they walked into the room was everything I'd hoped for!We eased ourselves into the morning with a ‘Find Your Classmates' wordsearch before having a good old catch-up and talking about some of the exciting things we have in store for their final year at Southill.The class were also introduced to Jolanta, our new Teaching Assistant, w

This annual event is always a brilliant opportunity for pupils to step outside their comfort zones, broaden their horizons and experience something completely new before making the exciting move to secondary school.

Thursday 18 June 2026 St Ives Day 4 As we come to the end of the fourth and final day of one of the best residential visits we've had the pleasure to organise and attend, I can only reflect on what an incredibly special class this is. All week, they have given every activity their fullest engagement and effort. They have been cheerful, polite and respectful at all times, remaining organised and attentive.

Wednesday 17 June 2026 Y6: St Ives Day 3 Surf's up! Today was the big beach day, something that our pupils have been greatly looking forward to. After another good night's sleep (we can't believe how well the night times are going!) the kids served themselves breakfast and got packed and ready for a day at the beach. St Ives Surf school is excellent - the instructors are friendly, experienced and great with the kids. While they were instructing half of the class at a time, the rest of the pupils were body-boarding and playing beach games. We spent the entire day on the beach, eating our packed lunch while fending off those thug-like St Ives Seagulls... they make Weymouth seagulls seem like Christmas robins!

Tuesday 16 June 2026 Y6: St Ives Day 2 Yesterday was a very long and tiring day for Year 6, so when we planned the itinerary, we thought it would be perfect to follow it with a relaxing and cultured art day. What a lovely day it has been! This class truly is a class of great culture.

SATs week is now complete and I honestly could not be prouder of the way the children conducted themselves from start to finish. They approached every single day with focus, calmness and resilience, showing exactly how much they have matured this year.
