We are READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE!

Lights, camera, PSHE!

This afternoon, Year 6 explored three very important words that sit at the heart of everything we do in school: READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE!

We began by thinking about what our school rules actually look like in action. Being READY means being prepared to learn, listening carefully and always trying our best. We discussed how our body language can show that we are ready too. Good eye contact, attentive listening and our brilliant ‘Give Me Five’ are all simple ways to show that our brains are switched on and we are ready to go!

Next came RESPECTFUL. We talked about showing kindness to everyone, treating people equally and remembering that respect can be shown in lots of little ways. Using good manners, listening when somebody else is speaking and taking care of equipment and resources all matter. We also discussed the responsibility our Year 6 pupils have as the oldest children in the school, particularly when it comes to looking out for, supporting and setting a fantastic example to our younger pupils.

Finally, we explored what it means to be SAFE. From using apparatus sensibly to knowing our boundaries and moving carefully around the school, the children recognised that a little common sense goes a long way! Keeping our hands to ourselves, thinking before we act and making sensible choices help to keep everyone safe and happy.

After brainstorming everything they had learned in threes, it was time to bring the drama!

We headed outside where each group was challenged to create some compare and contrast role-play scenarios. What does being READY look like... and perhaps more entertainingly, what does it definitely NOT look like? The same challenge followed for being RESPECTFUL and SAFE.

And what performances we had!

There was some Oscar-worthy acting on display, particularly from our newly appointed Year 6 ‘teachers’. We witnessed plenty of dramatic finger-wagging, imaginary veins throbbing in foreheads and steam practically erupting from ears as they dealt with pupils who were most definitely not following the school rules.

Now they know how I feel!

The scenarios were funny, creative and surprisingly thought-provoking. Most importantly, the children absolutely understood the assignment. They could clearly identify positive choices, recognise when things were going wrong and explain how behaviour could be changed for the better.

It was a really enjoyable afternoon with plenty of laughter, teamwork and fantastic discussion, but behind all the fun was a message that will be important throughout Year 6 and beyond.
